Aquatic Plant Harvesting
Another
aquatic plant harvesting season
has come to a close. The harvesting season ran from mid May through Labor Day.
This year’s harvesting objectives were met and included the practice of
documenting the names of property owners requesting that plants be harvested in
front of their properties. The property owner names will be used in the future
by the crew to determine which frontage to harvest. Our present policy is to not
harvest in front of properties unless specifically requested by the property
owners. Owners can call the Sanitary District Office to have their names added
or removed from the harvesting list.
Certain areas in the lake (i.e. Beyers Cove, City
Millpond, Norwegian Bay, etc.) have been designated as sensitive areas. Areas
designated as sensitive usually require some type of special care to protect
their unique characteristics (i.e. fish spawning). These sensitive areas are
harvested according to specific plans developed in cooperation with the
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. In those cases where individual property
owner needs
conflict with the needs of designated sensitive areas, the sensitive area needs
take precedence.
The GLSD would like to thank the Green Lake
Association and the City of Green Lake for their financial support of the AQWEED
Program. We would also like to thank those property owners around the lake who
have allowed us to dock the harvesting equipment during the summer season.
