Partners with Education
Partners
with Education is an active learning partnership between the Green Lake Sanitary
District, the Green Lake Association and schools and colleges surrounding Big
Green Lake.
Its mission is to
work cooperatively on
lake-related improvement projects. These include monitoring the health
of water in the lake and its tributaries, protecting environmentally sensitive
areas in and around the lake, maintaining the lake fisheries, working to protect
valuable native vegetation and to control unwanted exotic vegetation, and much
more.
Students, lake
organizations, government, and citizens will all benefit from Partners with
Education activities:
-
Students get
learning opportunities while helping to protect the lake.
-
Students gain an
appreciation of the valuable resources within their community, which in turn
helps to shape them as lifelong environmental stewards.
-
Cooperation
among lake organizations, citizens, and government for gathering
information will help with the ongoing tasks required to maintain and
protect the lake and surrounding watershed.
-
Youth and adult
Involvement with lake protection issues will ensure sound lake management
decisions.
-
The community
can actively participate in protecting Green Lake with hands-on activities
provided through this program.
Partners with
Education
As of the Fall 1998, the GLSD and Green
Lake Association continue to be actively involved with each of the four
school districts (Green Lake, Ripon, Markesan, Princeton) surrounding Big Green
Lake. Currently, students and their teachers are actively involved with or
have expressed an interest to perform work or study the following areas:
Norwegian Bay bulrushes, biotic indexing of Big Green Lake tributaries, lake
fisheries, shoreland preservation and restoration, plant and animal habitat
studies, and lake water quality.
The information and data obtained by students is
used by the GLSD and other lake organizations to make better informed lake and
watershed related decisions, as well as to become part of the historical
databases.
