Green Lake Sanitary District
Your Sanitary District is involved in
a wide variety of activities. A summary of the District’s current major
functions with a brief description of each is provided below:
-
Monitoring of Lake and
Watershed Waters - A
number of ongoing activities are preformed regularly to insure the
protection and health of Big Green Lake. These activities include, but are
not limited to: measuring phosphorus and suspended sediment levels in and
around the lake, monitoring the clarity of the water at various stations
around the lake, bacteria sampling at the lake beaches and lake tributaries,
and various other water sampling and temperature tracking.
-
Nonpoint Pollution Control
Practices - Nonpoint
pollution is pollution that occurs at various points near the lake (i.e.
barnyard runoff, soil erosion from construction, etc.) and then, finds its
way into the lake vii tributaries, etc. The GLSD participates in a
cost-sharing program to reduce lake pollution on a priority basis.
-
Wastewater from the Nine Areas
within the GLSD - Areas 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 are currently sewered and connected via, sewer
collection system to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The other four areas are serviced by onsite systems that also transport their waste to the
WWTP. These other six areas are included in a management plan whereby the
District monitors the removal and treatment of wastewater from these onsite
systems.
-
Recreational Activities -
The primary activity in this
area is the cutting and harvesting of aquatic plants (AQWEED) where they
pose a problem for recreational boating. The GLSD is also involved with
various other groups (i.e. DNR, fishing organizations, etc.) and activities
(i.e. Carp Trap, etc.) for the betterment of the recreational users of the
lake.
-
Solid Waste:
Garbage Collection and Recycling - The
GLSD contracts garbage
collection and recycling services for Sanitary District residents. The
Sanitary District also assists with certain customer services and
administrative issues associated with the solid waste collection program.
The District also provides recycling service on a contracted basis for those
residents not interested in dropping their recyclables at town recycling
centers. Wisconsin law requires all residents who dispose of waste to
recycle.
