About Clintonville Beat the Heat

|
Clintonville Beat the Heat was started in 1994 by then Lieutenant Terry Lorge of the Clintonville Police Department. Terry had been drag racing for many years prior to his involvement and, after becoming familiar with the Brillion Chapter, he made a decision to start a chapter in Clintonville to give local high school students an opportunity to learn about teamwork, performance, and competition. Since 1994, with the help of lifelong friend Dick Fletcher, teachers Sam Carey and Al Wichmann, local mechanic and auto center owner Ed Jensen, and School Technology Coordinator Craig Hodne, Clintonville Beat the Heat has continued to prosper and allow local youths an opportunity to develop a friendly relationship with local law enforcement while learning and having fun. To date, over 120 high school students in the Clintonville School District have participated in Beat the Heat. The police officers, advisors and the youth spend nearly 350 hours together each year. Only about 50 of the hours are at the race track. A majority of the time the officers and youth spend together are during workshops. While working on, building, or repairing the race cars, the officers educate the youth of the hazards of drug use, alcohol abuse and unsafe driving. The officers also act as mentors, by being a role model for the youth. Therefore, Beat The Heat
is a creative concept used to educate youth regarding drug and alcohol
abuse and the importance of safe driving. |
