The chapter made a trip to Appleton to experience a
demonstration on a chassis dynamometer at the Extreme
Performance Motorsports shop. This field trip had been
organized through the efforts of Gary Wiese, owner of Automotive
Specialties, Neenah, and Dan Rhodes, owner of Extreme
Peformance Motorsports.

Clintonville Beat the Heat
advisor Ed Jensen provided the test car. It is a front-engine dragster
powered by a 540 cubic inch big block Chevrolet. |
 |
The car is tied down to the dynamometer and
thoughts are exchanged on how to connect the headers to the shop
exhaust. With no lengthy exhaust system to cool the exhaust gases,
there is concern for how the flexible hoses will withstand the exhaust
heat. |
 |
Gary Weise applies a clamp to the exhaust hose,
while Ed Jensen, Terry Lorge, and Dan Rhodes connect the sensors to
monitor engine RPM and air/fuel mixture. |
 |
Prior to making a "pull," Dan, Gary, and Terry
explain to the students how a dynamometer can be used to tune an
engine. Gary prepared a handout for the students to follow along and
estimate what the instruments would reveal. |
 |
The dynamometer uses a computer to gather the
data from the several sensors and displays the results on the screen.
This screen indicates some of the sensor measurements. Other screens
display the RPM/torque curves and the resulting horsepower on a chart.
Several charts can be superimposed so that several "pulls" can be
compared. |
 |
The computer console is operated by Scott Bristol
(black hat), while Dan Rhodes sits in the car and operates the throttle
and monitors engine conditions. |
Altogether, 5 advisors and 16 students participated in
this educational field trip.
The Clintonville Chapter of Northeast
Wisconsin Beat the Heat is very appreciative of Dan
Rhodes and Scott Bristol at Extreme Performance
Motorsports and Gary Wiese of Automotive
Specialties for giving up most of a Saturday so our
students may benefit.
Thanks for a great day!
