Two additions were built in later years. William's wife and children assisted in the work of the hotel--making beds, cleaning rooms, stabling the guests' horses, cooking and waiting tables in the hotel restaurant. The abstract of title for the Franklin House shows that William bought out Peter Schweitzer's share in May of 1876. At various times, there were leins on the property to another brother-in-law, Nicholas A. Schmit, and to John Schmit, Mary Beyer, G.A. Murray, Michael Cooney, Mary Gurner and Freidrich Fehrmann. The property appears to have been sold to Charles Hanke in August of 1899 for $5000. However, Anna Kraus Nussbaum made a statement in 1936 that her family ran the Franklin House continuously from 1873 until about 1901 with the exception of 1893. The abstract does show a mortgage paid in full by Mary Gurner to William and Anna Nussbaum on August 22, 1901. According to his daughter, Gertrude, he sold the hotel when she was very young due to his poor health.
