Here is a description of the steps your email takes as it travels from your computer out to the intended recipients. It all begins when you click the Send button in your email:

1. After writing a letter, and you hit send, most email programs put it in an Outbox, ready to send. If they are online, they immediately contact the mail server and start delivering the message.
