Howto: Searching for Files by Myrddin

If you do not know what version of Windows you have, go here.

Windows XP

  1. Click the [Start] button, in the bottom left corner of your screen. You do not have to close anything first.
  2. Select Search from the menu, near the bottom.
  3. Type the name of the file you wish to search for. Use the '*' character to match parts of a file. Examples:
    • Report*.doc
    • *.mp3
    • beatles
  4. Click [Search] and wait for the search to perform.

Windows 95, 98, or ME

  1. Click the [Start] button, in the bottom left corner of your screen. You do not have to close anything first.
  2. Select Find->Files or Folders from the menu, near the bottom.
  3. Type the name of the file you wish to search for. Use the '*' character to match parts of a file. Examples:
    • Report*.doc
    • *.mp3
    • beatles
  4. In the Where dropdown box below, select 'Local Hard Drives', or if that is not available, select the 'C:' drive.
  5. Click [Find Now] and wait for the search to perform.

Windows 2000

  1. Click the [Start] button, in the bottom left corner of your screen. You do not have to close anything first.
  2. Select Search->Files or Folders from the menu, near the bottom.
  3. Type the name of the file you wish to search for. Use the '*' character to match parts of a file. Examples:
    • Report*.doc
    • *.mp3
    • beatles
  4. In the Where dropdown box below, select 'Local Hard Drives'.
  5. Click [Find Now] and wait for the search to perform.
